So when you die, what you own should go to your heir as the new head of the clan. For example if you are going for your own kingdom by the time you have the influence and relations up enough (to not just get immediately stomped) the main quest givers will die from old age. Unless your real lucky or play on the lowest settings there is no chance to have an independent kingdom and able defend it under 10-20 years. Yes, I have seen rulers die in combat.
