I have both a new Funnyplaying IPS kit SP and a couple of AGS101s. Between the two, if you compare the default brightness of the IPS to the 101 at the bright setting they aren't that far off, with 101 being a tad brighter. They aren't that much different though and I actually prefer the 101 screen, all you're really getting is less ghosting.
The Game Boy Advance AGB-101 mod has been a thing since as early as 2012 something like that, it involves using an AGS-101 LCD either OEM or reproduction and a ribbon cable made for adapting the AGS-101 LCD to the AGB-001 motherboard (40 pin or 32 pin).
Be careful when installing it and it's pretty much a permanent mod when you install the screen gasket. AGS-101 Pros: Lower battery consumption compared to the IPS. Has that classic retro look. With its more durable casing, LCD isn't as sensitive as the IPS. AGS-101 Cons: Expensive. You can add brightness controls but those are a different mod.

When it’s connected to the GBA motherboard via the adapter, the backlight and power light flicker on before immediately shutting off.
